Wylie Coyote Kerry

Poor John Kerry. Like Wylie Coyote who can never catch his Roadrunner, Kerry's political pursuits lately have made him l'objet de ridicule in all but far left circles.

Today he called for a filbuster of the Alito nomination... from Switzerland! Probably hired the Ricola Swiss Hornblowers to sound the call.

Rove couldn't have scripted it better.

From the Washington Post Online:

"Continuing to threaten a filibuster, even after it is crystal clear that Democrats don't have the necessary votes to sustain their obstruction, is needless, strange and at odds with many of their fellow Democrats," Sen. John Cornyn (R-Tex.) said in a statement. Some Republicans poked fun at Kerry -- the 2004 Democratic presidential nominee, who may make another White House bid -- for allowing others to announce the filibuster plan earlier in the day while he was attending an economic conference in Davos, Switzerland.

CNNGALLUP SHOCK POLL: ONLY 16% FIRM ON HILLARY FOR PRESIDENT
DRUDGE REPORT, Wed Jan 25 2006

Most voters now say there's no way they'd vote for Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton if she runs for president in 2008 - while just 16 percent are firmly in her camp, a stunning new poll shows.

CNNGALLUP found that 51 percent say they definitely won't vote for Clinton (D-N.Y.) in 2008, another 32 percent might consider it, and only 16 percent vow to back her. That means committed anti-Hillary voters outnumber pro-Hillary voters by 3-1. The poll suggests she can forget about crossover votes - 90 percent of Republicans and 75 percent of conservatives say there's no way they'd back her.

Plantation Madness

Hillary's Plantation:
Hillary Clinton reveals her fear of Condi Rice.
WSJ.com Opinion Journal, BY SHELBY STEELE Monday, January 23, 2006

[Excerpted] If blacks were to take her [Condi Rice's] example and embrace overcoming rather than grievance, the wound to liberalism would be mortal. It is impossible to imagine Hillary Clinton's "plantation" pandering in a room full of Condi Rices.

This is why so many Republicans (including Laura Bush) now salivate at the thought of a Rice presidential bid. No other potential Republican candidate could--to borrow an old Marxist phrase--better "heighten the contradictions" of modern liberalism and Democratic power than Ms. Rice. The more ugly her persecution by the civil rights establishment and the left, the more she would give liberalism the look of communism in its last days--an ideology long since hollowed of its idealism and left with nothing save its meanness and repressiveness. Who can say what Ms. Rice will do. But history is calling her, or someone like her. She is the object of a deep longing in America for race to be finally handled, not by political idealisms, but by the classic principles of freedom and fairness.

Idealisms quickly descend into evil because they are so easily seized as a means to ordinary power. The politics of black uplift was once an idealism, but today it has become the work of hacks, tired apparatchiks and petty demagogues looking for power. And there, on TV last week, as if to illustrate this truth, was the specter of Mrs. Clinton and Al Sharpton embracing at the podium, mere captives of power making the tired charge--via an encrusted plantation metaphor--that Republicans are racists. What exhaustion! And what evil, to labor so hard at keeping blacks mired in grievance. Kind of reminds one of a plantation, though here the harvest is surely grievance rather than cotton.

Teddy's Smears

Ted Kennedy's Club Discriminated , NewsMax.com

When Ted Kennedy tried to chastise Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito for his one-time membership in a group opposed to admitting more women and minorities to Princeton, the pot was calling the kettle black.

Sen. Kennedy still belongs to a social club for Harvard students and alumni that was thrown off campus nearly 20 years ago after refusing to allow female members, an investigation by the Washington Times reveals. According to the membership directory of the Owl Club, Kennedy updated his personal information as recently as September 7.

Ironically, the Owl Club, long reviled at Harvard as "sexist," was evicted from the campus in 1984 for violating federal anti-discrimination laws authored by Kennedy. ...

Kennedy's hypocritical attack on Alito over his membership in CAP would come as no surprise to readers of the blockbuster new book "Do As I Say (Not As I Do): Profiles in Liberal Hypocrisy" by bestselling author Peter Schweizer.

In his book Schweizer discloses that while Kennedy has fought for the estate tax and spoken out against tax shelters, he has repeatedly benefited from an intricate web of trusts and private foundations that have shielded most of his family's fortune from the IRS.

One Kennedy family trust wasn't even set up in the U.S., but in Fiji.

Schweizer also reveals that while Kennedy has championed the development of alternate energy sources, he opposed a plan to build a wind-power generating facility to provide clean, cheap power to Cape Cod.

The reason: The wind turbines would be positioned off the coast from the Kennedy compound in Hyannis, in one of the family's favorite yachting and sailing areas.

Kennedy (McCarthy) Redux

ALITO WIFE LEAVES HEARING IN TEARS AFTER DEM ATTACK, DRUDGE, Wed Jan 11 2006

Judge Samuel A. Alito’s wife Martha left the confirmation hearing room in tears this evening, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned.Sen.

Lindsey Graham (R-SC) apologized to the Judge’s family for the behavior of his fellow committee members during the course of the last three days.

Sen. Graham said: “Judge Alito, I am sorry that you’ve had to go through this. I am sorry that your family has had to sit here and listen to this.”

Democrats on the Judiciary Committee have attacked Judge Samuel A. Alito over his membership in Concerned Alumni of Princeton and his involvement in the Vanguard case.

One senior Republican in the hearing room said of the situation: “After three full days of attacks against her husband’s character, Mrs. Alito had enough. Democrat behavior during this hearing has not only been wrong, it’s been embarrassing. Ted Kennedy is nothing but a bully.”

It's the Demography, Stupid
By Mark Steyn, in The New Criterion, as part of symposium, The Real Culture War

Most people reading this have strong stomachs, so let me lay it out as baldly as I can: Much of what we loosely call the western world will not survive this century, and much of it will effectively disappear within our lifetimes, including many if not most western European countries. There’ll probably still be a geographical area on the map marked as Italy or the Netherlands— probably—just as in Istanbul there’s still a building called St. Sophia’s Cathedral. But it’s not a cathedral; it’s merely a designation for a piece of real estate. Likewise, Italy and the Netherlands will merely be designations for real estate. The challenge for those who reckon western civilization is on balance better than the alternatives is to figure out a way to save at least some parts of the west.

Howard: The Incredible Sulk

Howard Dean, John Kerry, and Friends: When Do We Call it Treason?

The National Ledger, By Edward L. Daley, Dec 9, 2005

Article III, section 3, Clause 1 of the United States Constitution relates that "Treason against the United States shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, GIVING THEM AID AND COMFORT."

On December 4, 2005 Senator John Kerry told Bob Schieffer of the CBS television program 'Face the Nation', "There is no reason, Bob, why American soldiers need to be going into the homes of Iraqis in the middle of the night, TERRORIZING kids and children, you know, women, breaking sort of the customs of the - of the historical customs - religious customs - whether you like it or not."

Whose side are they on?

The following day, Howard Dean, the Chairman of the Democrat National Committee stated on a San Antonio, Texas radio program that the "idea that we're going to win the war in Iraq is an idea which is JUST PLAIN WRONG," and "I've seen this before in my life. This is the same situation we had in Vietnam."

Back in June of this year, Senator Dick Durbin remarked, after reading from a report that Guantanamo Bay detainees had been chained to a floor, forced to listen to loud rap music, and endure uncomfortable temperatures in their cells, "If I read this to you and did not tell you that it was an FBI agent describing what Americans had done to prisoners in their control, you would most certainly believe this MUST HAVE BEEN DONE BY NAZIS, SOVIETS IN THEIR GULAGS, OR SOME MAD REGIME - POL POT or others - that had no concern for human beings."

In May of 2004, Representative John Murtha was quoted as saying that "the direction [of the war] has got be changed or it is UNWINNABLE," going on to state that "WE CANNOT PREVAIL in this war as it is going today."

That same month, Senator Ted Kennedy remarked, "shamefully, we now learn that Saddam's TORTURE CHAMBERS REOPENED UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT: U.S. MANAGEMENT," referring to the Abu Ghraib prison story which recounted the humiliation of suspected terrorists by a few rogue American service members.

Abraham Lincoln once wrote that "Congressmen who willfully take actions during wartime that damage morale and undermine the military are saboteurs and should be arrested, exiled or hanged," and I couldn't agree more with that assertion. To even suggest that American soldiers are "terrorizing" innocent people in Iraq, or that the war they are fighting is "unwinnable" amounts to treason, as it does indeed give "aid and comfort" to our enemies, and further endangers the lives of those fighting men and women to whom the Congressmen mentioned above owe their very way of life...

Talking with al Qaeda?

Artifices of impeachment

Townhall.com, Jan 5, 2006, by Debra Saunders

The Left -- from The Nation's Katrina vanden Heuvel to Newsweek's Jonathan Alter -- has pulled out the impeachment card and is brandishing it as the weapon that will drive George W. Bush from the White House. This could be more than talk. Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer is consulting with legal eagles as she explores the idea…

Angry leftists are so hysterical that they cannot distinguish between government agents eavesdropping on a president's political enemies, and the data mining of international phone calls in an earnest effort to thwart another Sept. 11 terrorist attack. They don't see that Bush, rather then trying to hide his role in the effort, signed off on the program more than 30 times.

Warrantless wiretaps? Victoria Toensing, a former deputy assistant attorney general in the Reagan administration, called CNN recently to note that the Clinton administration authorized the warrantless search of the house of CIA employee Aldrich Ames.

But the Dems didn't talk of impeachment then….

This whole NSA story reinforces the fact that Bush is willing to be unpopular, risk the White House even, to get the job done, while too many of his Democratic critics will walk over anyone to stand up for their lack of principles.

Reid Takes Bad Wampum

Harry Reid Caught in Abramoff Plea Deal?

This morning's announcement that Washington super-lobbyist Jack Abramoff has reached a plea bargain deal with the Justice Department has reporters salivating over what they hint is going to be a Republican mega-scandal.

But it turns out that the most prominent player in Abramoff's web of influence was reportedly none other than the Senate's top Democrat, Harry Reid. -- NewsMax, Jan 3, 2006
